Lewa Safari Marathon 2026 Launched to Enhance Wildlife Conservancy

2 Mins read

The 2026 Lewa Safari Marathon has officially been launched, with organisers inviting runners from around the world to participate in one of Kenya’s most iconic conservation-driven sporting events.

The marathon, scheduled for June 27 at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, is expected to attract hundreds of participants and raise over KSh15 million to support wildlife protection and rural community initiatives.

International entries are already open, while registrations for Kenyan and East African runners will begin on March 27.

A Legacy of Conservation Impact

Since its inception in 2000, the Lewa Safari Marathon has raised over KSh1.3 billion, funding critical conservation and community projects across Kenya.

These efforts have contributed to remarkable outcomes, including the recovery of endangered species such as the Hawksbill turtle and Grevy’s zebra, as well as population increases in rhinos and the rare mountain bongo.

Beyond wildlife, the marathon has supported more than 40,000 clinic visits, funded education programmes, and strengthened livelihoods through support for pastoralists and women-led enterprises.

Race with a Unique Wilderness Experience

Set against the backdrop of sprawling savannahs, riverbanks, and acacia woodlands, the marathon offers multiple race categories including a full marathon, half marathon, 10km race, and a children’s run. Over the years, more than 25,000 runners from over 40 countries have participated.

The event has also attracted elite athletes such as Eliud Kipchoge, Paul Tergat, and Catherine Ndereba. It is consistently ranked among the world’s top amateur races by Runner’s World.

Strong Corporate Backing Drives Impact

Long-time sponsors Safaricom and Huawei have reaffirmed their support for the marathon. Safaricom, the event’s main sponsor since its inception, has pledged KSh10 million towards this year’s race.

Additional partners include National Bank of Kenya, ICEA Lion, Tropical Heat, Safarilink, AMREF, Elewana, and Land and Life Foundation.

These partnerships play a key role in financing conservation programmes, enhancing community development, and promoting sustainable tourism.

Conservation and Community at the Core

Speaking during the launch, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy CEO Mike Watson emphasised the marathon’s impact, noting that every step taken by participants contributes to securing habitats, protecting endangered species, and building resilient communities.

Chantal Migongo-Bake of Tusk described the event as a global movement that unites runners for a shared purpose, safeguarding Kenya’s wildlife and uplifting local livelihoods.

A Global Platform for Kenyan Conservation

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is home to over 70 species of mammals and more than 500 bird species, making it one of Kenya’s most biodiverse ecosystems.

Funds raised through the marathon support a wide network of conservation organisations, including Grevy’s Zebra Trust, Big Life Foundation, and Tsavo Trust, among others.

As preparations begin, the 2026 Lewa Safari Marathon once again positions itself as more than just a race but a powerful platform driving conservation, community empowerment, and global awareness.
