CBK Licenses 32 More Digital Lenders as Total Reaches 227

The Central Bank of Kenya has licensed an additional 32 Digital Credit Providers (DCPs), bringing the total number of approved digital lenders in the country to 227.

The move, announced on April 14, 2026, is in line with Section 59(2) of the Central Bank of Kenya Act and follows the licensing of 42 DCPs in December 2025.

The regulator noted it has received over 800 applications since March 2022 and has been engaging applicants to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

CBK said its review process has focused on business models, consumer protection measures, and the suitability of shareholders, directors, and management teams. The regulator emphasized that the licensing framework is aimed at safeguarding customer interests and ensuring adherence to the law.

Digital Credit Providers in Kenya primarily offer loans through digital platforms, including USSD codes. Their products range from education and development loans to short-term personal credit, asset financing, and business loans.

According to CBK data, as of February 2026, licensed DCPs had issued 7.5 million loans valued at Ksh.133.5 billion, reflecting the growing demand for digital lending services.

The regulator urged applicants still undergoing the licensing process to submit required documentation promptly to facilitate approval. It also called on the public to report unregulated lenders, citing past concerns over predatory practices such as high interest rates, unethical debt collection, and misuse of personal data.

The licensing and oversight framework was introduced to address these concerns and restore confidence in Kenya’s fast-growing digital credit market.
