Five more Kenyans have joined the growing list of winners in Safaricom’s nationwide Shangwe @25 consumer promotion, each walking away with Kes 1 million and an additional Kes 250,000 dedicated to a community project of their choice.
The new millionaires are Hannah Ngige from Komarock, Wellington Juma from Kisumu, Taala Chelanga from Elgeyo Marakwet, Elizabeth Wairimu from Thika, and Sheila Cheptoo from Bomet. Their addition brings the total number of millionaires in the promotion to ten since its launch last month.
The winners were awarded during a colourful ceremony held at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi, where Safaricom also rewarded customers through its Green Box mechanic.
Fifty-six-year-old Ngige, a second-hand goods seller, said the news came at a much-needed time.
“I am extremely happy and grateful. I plan to invest back into my business and start tomato farming in Kimana. For my community project, I will support Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital’s maternity wing with beddings,” she said.
Clinical Officer Wellington Juma from Chulaimbo, Kisumu, said the congratulatory call caught him by surprise.
“At first, I thought it was fraud. I plan to complete my house and equip my small clinic. My community project will support a widows’ group in Ahero,” he noted.
In Bomet, 25-year-old poultry farmer Sheila Cheptoo received the news while unwell.
“I didn’t believe it until the confirmation message came. I plan to scale my poultry business and support my siblings’ school fees. For my project, I will donate beddings and food to Kitoben Primary Children’s Home.”
Another winner, Taala Chelanga from Elgeyo Marakwet, said the win was life-changing as she dreams of buying land and building a home.
“I have never held such an amount in my life. This is a miracle,” she said.
For Thika shopkeeper Elizabeth Wairimu, the win comes during a difficult period for her family.
“I plan to buy a plot and build rental units, and also expand my kiosk. I will support Twiga Primary School in Juja with textbooks,” she said.
