The National Police Service (NPS) has launched an intensive investigation following the tragic killing of Reverend Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, who was fatally shot by unknown gunmen in Kabartile Village, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

According to a statement released by NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the incident occurred in Mokoro Location, Kakiptul Sub-Location, prompting a swift response from General Service Unit (GSU) officers. The police confirmed that six suspects have since been arrested in connection with the attack and are currently in custody as investigations continue.

Preliminary findings have ruled out cattle rustling or banditry—common in the region—as the motive behind the killing. The police said the exact motive remains unclear and is still under investigation.

“This is a heinous crime, and we are working around the clock to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice,” said Nyaga. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and parishioners of Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett.”

The NPS urged residents of the region to remain calm and assured them that the area is under tight security surveillance. Authorities also appealed to the public to volunteer any information that might assist with the ongoing investigation through toll-free lines 999, 911, 112, or anonymously via #FichuakwaDCI (0800 722 203).

The police reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of all Kenyans and their property.
