CIC Insurance Group, a prominent Kenyan insurance provider and member of the UN Global Compact Network Kenya, has launched its six-year sustainability strategy for 2025-2030 and released its inaugural sustainability report for 2024.

The plan centers on four main pillars: Environmental Stewardship, Social Responsibility, Economic Resilience, and Responsible Governance, reflecting the Group’s commitment to sustainable growth and community impact.

Speaking at the report launch, CIC Group Managing Director and CEO Patrick Nyaga emphasized that the company’s sustainability mission aligns with its cooperative values. “Our strategy supports our customers, including cooperatives, by fostering affordable and sustainable risk management solutions,” he said, adding that CIC is developing products tailored to address emerging risks, such as climate change.

The sustainability report outlines CIC’s progress and future ambitions, including increasing microinsurance policies to 25 percent of total policies by 2030, achieving gender balance across its workforce, and allocating more revenue towards social investment initiatives.

Key highlights of CIC’s sustainability efforts include its adoption of low-carbon technologies such as energy-efficient lighting, solar-powered water pumps, and replacing desktop computers with laptops to reduce energy consumption. The report also details the company’s training programs, which included 40 sessions for senior management and cooperative board members covering digital lending, financial wellness, and cyber security.

Dr. Nelson Kuria, Group Chairman, highlighted CIC’s focus on agriculture, noting that insurance for farmers continues to grow amid climate challenges. “We remain committed to derisking farmers affected by adverse weather, ensuring claims are promptly addressed,” he said.

CIC’s sustainability journey is further backed by the Nairobi Declaration on Sustainable Insurance, which aligns with international goals such as the UN Global Compact. The Group’s strategic goals for 2030 include promoting diversity and inclusion, reducing waste to landfill by 25 Percent, cutting Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent, and improving the customer satisfaction index to 90 percent

The Group also offers innovative insurance products designed to meet the unique needs of various communities, including Co-opcare, a medical plan for cooperative members, and the Seniors Mediplan, a health insurance policy for senior citizens. CIC also provides affordable options for low-income families in Uganda and Malawi.

CIC aims to enhance community engagement through initiatives like the CIC Foundation, bolster local entrepreneurship, and improve employee engagement levels.
