Nairobi, August 7, 2024— Kenyan youth, led by activist Kasmuel McOure, have vowed to proceed with a significant protest scheduled for August 8, which they are calling “Nane Nane.”

The demonstration is being framed as a critical effort to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration and seek major political and social reforms.

During a press briefing in Nairobi on Wednesday, McOure declared that the August 8 protest would be a historic event, marking a decisive moment for the youth’s struggle against President William Ruto’s government.

The protest is set to culminate in a march to State House, where the youth plan to demand Ruto’s resignation, accusing him of failing to address key issues such as land distribution, education, and healthcare.

“Nane Nane is going to be our final day in the streets,” McOure stated. “We are marching because the Kenya Kwanza regime has taken everything from us. We want a country that provides land, education, and healthcare. Tomorrow is a forward march in our annals of history.”

McOure also issued a stern warning against the use of force by the state security organs. He condemned the deployment of armed police officers in civilian clothes and declared that such individuals would be treated as “robbers” and “colonizers” if encountered during the protest.

David Safara, a representative from Dandora, echoed McOure’s sentiments, emphasizing that the youth would not be used as “goons” and reaffirming their commitment to the cause.

The youth’s remarks come amid concerns from Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli, who has warned that the protest might be infiltrated by criminals. Masengeli cited intelligence reports indicating potential for violence and looting, urging protesters to comply with legal boundaries and avoid sensitive sites like the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and State House.

As tensions rise, both the youth and security forces brace for a potentially intense demonstration, highlighting the deep divisions within Kenya’s political landscape.
