Safaricom, through its youth-focused platform Safaricom Hook, has sponsored the 8th edition of the National Science and Technology Exhibition by Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) with a KES 3 million boost. Underscoring its continued commitment to supporting innovation and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education among Kenyan youth.
The highly anticipated exhibition, running from August 5th to 9th at Moi Educational Centre in South C, Nairobi, has brought together over 250 secondary school students selected from a competitive pool of more than 3,000 applicants from across the country.
The students are showcasing research-based innovations in areas such as health, agriculture, environmental science, digital technology, and social innovation.
This year’s theme, “Using STEM to Drive Towards a Sustainable Future,” highlights the role of science and innovation in tackling socio-economic and environmental challenges.
“We believe that Kenya’s future lies in the hands of its young people. By supporting platforms like Young Scientists Kenya, we are investing in the ideas, energy, and creativity that will shape our nation’s tomorrow,” said Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, Chief Consumer Business Officer, Safaricom PLC.
With this latest sponsorship, Safaricom’s total support to YSK has now reached KES 65 million since 2018, making a lasting impact on thousands of learners by promoting scientific curiosity and innovation.
As part of the sponsorship package, Safaricom Hook will reward outstanding student innovators with smartphones, smartwatches, headphones, and airtime—a move aimed at motivating continued innovation and excellence in STEM.
Beyond student participation, the exhibition is also attracting 150 teachers, policymakers, industry leaders, and academics, who will participate in mentoring sessions and policy dialogues geared toward strengthening STEM education in Kenya.
YSK has grown into a flagship program in the country’s education landscape, fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation among learners and educators. Since its inception, it has played a pivotal role in elevating the quality and visibility of STEM education.
Safaricom Hook continues to be a driver of youth empowerment through programs in technology, skills development, and cultural expression, including digital training forums, tech bootcamps, and internship opportunities that prepare young people for the future of work.
