The Wang’uru International Stadium came alive this past Sunday as it hosted the grand finale of Season 2 of the Hon. Mary Maingi Super Cup Football Tournament — an event that attracted thousands of fans, dignitaries, entertainers, and teams from across Mwea Constituency.
Billed as one of the most dynamic grassroots sports events in the region, this year’s edition was nothing short of spectacular. Ninety teams participated in the tournament, which has grown into a powerful platform for showcasing talent, promoting community spirit, and empowering the youth through sports.
The finals delivered intense football action and emotional victories. In the men’s third-place playoff, Ndorome FC clinched a 2-0 win over Murubara FC. The women’s final saw Kutus Queens edge out Mukou Queens 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. The men’s final between Kinyaga FC and Kiriko FC ended in a 1-1 draw, with Kiriko eventually triumphing 7-6 in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Winners received cash prizes and were lauded for their contributions to Mwea’s burgeoning football legacy.
The tournament was not just about football — it doubled up as a celebration of Mwea’s rich culture. Music fans were treated to electrifying performances from local music sensation Wadagliz, famous for Anguka Nayo, and Mugithi star Joyce Wa Mama, whose live act energized the stadium.
Hon. Mary Maingi, the Member of Parliament for Mwea Constituency and the tournament’s patron, commended all participating teams, coaches, and fans for making the event a success.
“Season 2 of this tournament has shown us what is possible when we invest in our young people,” said Hon. Maingi. “Football has brought us together — it has shown us that unity, peace, and hard work can shape a better Mwea.”
She urged young people to stay focused, avoid divisive politics, and recognize their talents as the true foundation of Mwea’s future. Hon. Maingi also expressed gratitude to President William Ruto, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and the Kirinyaga County leadership for their support in making the tournament a reality.
“We are just getting started. The Mary Maingi Football Tournament is here to stay. Mwea’s talent is limitless, and we will keep creating platforms to showcase it,” she added, hinting at an even grander Season 3.
Also present was Mwea East Deputy County Commissioner Fred Ayieko, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to youth empowerment through sports. He noted that initiatives like the tournament are vital in steering young people away from drug abuse and other societal challenges.
