The University of Nairobi Student Association (UNSA) President, Rocha Madzao, has called for an urgent investigation into the death of Frankline Ondwari, a university student found dead under suspicious circumstances.
Madzao’s appeal comes amid troubling details about the case and growing demands for justice from the university community.
In a statement released today, Madzao expressed profound sadness and concern over Ondwari’s death, which is suspected to be a suicide. He described the circumstances surrounding the student’s death as both troubling and suspicious, and called for an immediate and thorough investigation.
UNSA President Rocha Madzao calls on urgent investigation on university student’s suspicious death
“The student’s family has reported that Ondwari’s last communication indicated he had been arrested for ‘being out during late hours.’ This revelation, combined with his subsequent death, raises serious questions about the events leading up to this tragedy. The entire university community, along with his family, is in mourning and seeking answers.”Madzao lamented
The Students Leader call to action includes a petition to the government and the National Police Service to conduct a transparent and impartial investigation into the arrest, detention, and death of Ondwari.
Madzao emphasized the need for a thorough examination of the officers involved and urged that any misconduct be prosecuted by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
This demand for accountability comes at a time when the police are under scrutiny for alleged human rights violations, particularly concerning the detention of individuals for minor offenses. Madzao urged the police to uphold human rights and dignity, as guaranteed by the Kenyan Constitution of 2010.
Madzao has demanded that Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Police Boss Adamson Bungei address the situation publicly and provide answers. He also called on relevant civil society groups, including the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Amnesty International, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHCR), and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), to investigate the matter.

The University of Nairobi which is currently closed until September demands justice for one of their own Frankline Ondwari.
The Students Council President has urged President Dr. William Ruto, Acting Inspector General Douglas Kanja, and Director of Criminal Investigations Mohammed Amin to protect university students amid national unrest, emphasizing the need for security and stability.
“As a university, we seek clarity as initial reports suggested suicide, but now external forces are involved. We only want justice,” stated Madzao, expressing concern over the evolving investigation.
Madzao’s statement reflects a broader community outcry for justice and transparency. The case has generated significant concern among students and the public, highlighting the need for a swift and thorough investigation to ensure accountability and restore trust in law enforcement institutions.
