The National Police Service (NPS) has arrested and interdicted two police officers in connection with the shooting of an unarmed civilian in Nairobi, in a move aimed at restoring public trust and accountability within the force.
In a statement released today by the NPS, the two officers identified as Police Constable Klinzy Barasa Masinde (Service No. 119413) and Police Constable Duncan Kiprono (Service No. 117193) were taken into custody following the incident and are currently being processed by the Homicide Team at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters.
The victim, Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, was shot under circumstances that the NPS described as “disturbing” and “unjustified.” He is currently receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition following successful surgery.
“The National Police Service deeply regrets this unjustified act and commiserates with the victim and his family, while reaffirming its full commitment to ensuring justice is served,” the statement read.
The interdiction of the two officers signals a rare and swift disciplinary response by the NPS as public concern continues to mount over allegations of excessive force by police officers.
The incident, which occurred on June 17, sparked outrage on social media and renewed calls for police reforms.
Investigations are ongoing, and the NPS has assured the public that due process will be followed and accountability upheld.
This latest case adds to growing scrutiny of law enforcement practices in Kenya, with human rights organizations consistently calling for greater oversight and prosecution of officers found to have used unlawful force.
