Top students earn full Cambridge scholarships after excelling in African Olympiad competition

Four outstanding students who excelled in the African Olympiad Competition held in Karen, Nairobi, have been awarded three-year full scholarships to pursue their education under the Cambridge system. The scholarships mark a major milestone for the young scholars, who will now transition from the Kenyan education system to a globally recognized curriculum.

The students will also represent Kenya at the African Olympiad Academy Competition in Rwanda, where six countries are expected to participate.

Speaking during the event, Dr. James Katende, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, praised the Olympiad competitions as vital platforms that equip learners with essential skills and expose them to global opportunities.

“The competitions are not only about academic excellence but also about preparing learners to become problem solvers and leaders in society,” Dr. Katende emphasized.

Since its inception in 2009, the Kenya Mathematical Olympiad competition has seen remarkable growth, with the number of participants rising from 8,000 last year to 17,000 this year — a testament to the increasing interest and investment in nurturing young talent in STEM fields.

The final day of the competition was filled with celebration as participants showcased exceptional skills and creativity. Those who excelled hailed both the organizers and the government for supporting programs that open doors to a world of possibilities.

The Training and Talent Recruitment event was organized by the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) in collaboration with the African Olympiad Academy.
