Sanlam Kenya PLC in collaboration with the Getrude Hospital Foundation, has unveiled a major initiative designed to enhance the functional abilities of over 300 children. The initiative, titled “Enabling Children with Disabilities for a Brighter Tomorrow,” has received a significant boost through a Kshs 5.6 million partnership, supported by the Allianz Group Social Impact Fund. This fund is a key element of Allianz’s Corporate Citizenship Strategy, aimed at empowering the next generation and aiding persons with disabilities in overcoming systemic social risks.

The project, which is set to directly impact more than 300 children, focuses on improving their social and communication skills, fostering social inclusion, and enhancing their functional abilities. By equipping these children with essential skills and encouraging their integration into society, the initiative seeks to prepare them for future participation in the local job market with confidence.

At the launch event, Sanlam Kenya PLC Group Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nyamemba Patrick Tumbo emphasized the project’s comprehensive approach. “We are excited to collaborate with the Gertrudes Hospital Foundation on this noble initiative. The program will incorporate tailored occupational therapy interventions, sports, and art activities for the first cohort of over 50 children. These efforts aim to boost their functional abilities, independence, and overall quality of life.” Dr. Tumbo stated

Dr. Tumbo highlighted the program’s broader objectives: to foster a sense of belonging, promote independence, and enhance social inclusion. He noted that the ultimate goal is to prepare these children for educational and vocational opportunities, thus improving their prospects for future employment.

Ms. Nozizwe Vundla, Head of the Sanlam Foundation, underscored the foundation’s role as a steward of Sanlam’s reputation as a responsible corporate citizen. “Our mission is to drive positive social impact and protect Sanlam’s standing as a trusted entity within the communities we serve,” Ms. Vundla said.

She added that the foundation is committed to spearheading transformation in the financial sector and supporting community empowerment through initiatives like the Enabling Children with Disabilities for a Brighter Tomorrow project.

Dr. Robert Nyarango, CEO of the Gertrudes Children’s Hospital, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the foundation’s commitment to enhancing the independence and economic potential of children with disabilities. He expressed concern over the barriers faced by persons with disabilities in accessing formal employment, despite existing incentives for greater inclusion.

“The Gertrudes Hospital Foundation’s pediatric health intervention programs provide diagnostic, treatment, and care services at no cost, particularly to children in underserved areas,” Dr. Nyarango said. “Our mission is to improve access to quality healthcare services for disadvantaged children in Kenya and Eastern Africa. We believe that expanding access to quality healthcare significantly enhances each child’s developmental prospects.”

This collaborative effort between Sanlam Kenya and the Gertrudes Hospital Foundation marks a significant step toward improving the lives of children with disabilities in Kenya, ensuring they have the skills and support necessary to thrive and achieve their full potential.
