Safaricom through its Foundations, has launched the “Capture the Good” photography and videography challenge aimed at empowering creators to tell stories of transformation across communities in Kenya through visual storytelling.
The initiative, unveiled on May 12, 2026, seeks to showcase impactful community projects in education, health, economic empowerment and environmental conservation in the country.
The multi-stage competition is open to photographers and videographers from across the country, with entries being submitted through Capture the Good until May 30, 2026.
Creators to Document Community Transformation
Participants will select from 250 community projects spread across the country, visit the sites, create visual content and document the impact the initiatives have had on local communities.
The challenge is being implemented in partnership with the Photographers Association of Kenya, the Photojournalists Association of Kenya and Vivo, which joins the initiative as the mobile photography partner.
Speaking during the launch, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said visual storytelling has become a powerful way of connecting communities and highlighting real-life transformation.
“We live in a visual world, often enhanced by a photo or a video, building believability, relatability and connections, while allowing the rest of society to live through these stories. These platforms enable us to share stories of transformation, while humanizing the spaces where we serve our communities,” said Ndegwa.
Competition Structure and Prizes
After submission, entries will be reviewed by a judging panel which will shortlist 90 regional winners for a masterclass session where participants will refine and resubmit their work.
A second round of judging will then identify 18 national winners whose content will be featured on the Capture the Good website before being subjected to public voting.
The top three winners in both photography and videography categories will receive major cash awards, with the overall winners taking home KSh1 million each. Second-place winners will receive KSh750,000 while third-place winners will pocket KSh500,000.
Additional rewards worth KSh20.4 million, including airtime, vouchers, merchandise and data bundles, will also be awarded to participants to support content creation and submission.
The competition will run until August 14, 2026, culminating in the crowning of winners and an exhibition showcasing selected works.
M-PESA Foundation Breaks Ground for ICT Laboratory
During the launch event, the M-PESA Foundation also broke ground for a KSh12.5 million ICT laboratory at Kisumu Boys’ High School.
The project is expected to benefit more than 1,800 learners by enhancing digital learning experiences, promoting entrepreneurship and supporting innovation among students.
The foundation said the ICT facility aligns with efforts to advance Africa’s industrialization agenda and strengthen economic development through technology-driven education.
