Safaricom (NSE: SCOM) has unveiled a comprehensive response plan to support Kenyans affected by the recent protests, with a KES 50 million package aimed at immediate patient care and hospital infrastructure development.
During a visit to Kenyatta National Hospital, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa announced the initiative alongside a KES 15 million donation from Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations. “Our Foundations are there to stand with people, especially in times of need. We are happy to provide hospitals with structured support in times of emergencies, both for infrastructure improvement and patient recovery,” Ndegwa stated.
Out of the total donation, KES 10 million is designated for the hospital’s Disaster Response Centre, while KES 5 million will support patients injured and admitted to the hospital. This support includes assistive devices, smartphones and airtime for those who lost their phones, three months’ worth of food, and one year of rent for those in extreme conditions. Additionally, KES 12.5 million has been allocated for similar efforts nationwide.

Dr. Evanson Kamuri, CEO of Kenyatta National Hospital, expressed gratitude for the partnership. “We are happy to partner with Safaricom and continue to have a positive impact on Kenyans seeking medical assistance at this time of need,” he said.
Safaricom, through its M-PESA Foundation, will also organize medical camps in the affected areas, starting with Githurai on July 6, 2024, followed by Rongai at a later date.
In the medium-term, Safaricom plans to mobilize its Gen Z employees and other like-minded corporates and foundations under the #GenZforGenZ initiative. This will involve volunteer squads leading community outreaches, clean-ups, and medical camps.
The long-term strategy includes comprehensive community programs through M-PESA and Safaricom Foundations, with a focus on Gen Z. Initiatives include TVET scholarships, economic empowerment through the Ndoto Zetu program, agri-business opportunities through the Wezesha Agri Program, and access to business training and microloans in 13 counties, starting with Nakuru, Nairobi, Kajiado, and Migori. Additionally, the plan encompasses mental health support through strategic partnerships and complimentary counselling services.
Safaricom remains dedicated to uplifting our communities and ensuring the well-being of all Kenyans, especially the youth who are our future.
