Roselyne Njogu, Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs
By John Kariuki
Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, Roseline Njogu has firmly reminded the nation that the Government of Kenya carries a sacred duty to protect its citizens, especially those living and working abroad.
In a compelling opinion piece published by both The East African Standard and People Daily, PS Njogu underscored that the symbol of the shield at the heart of Kenya’s flag is not ornamental, it is the ultimate promise of protection by the State.
“That shield is not ornamental, it is symbolic. It represents the State’s promise of protection to its people,” she wrote, calling on all diaspora officers, diplomats, and foreign service staff to embody this pledge in their daily work.
PS Njogu stressed that while Kenya’s envoys abroad may hold various titles such as diplomats, diaspora officers, foreign service officers, or mabalozi, the most important title they must always embrace is that of ‘Protection Officer’. This role, she emphasized, carries the solemn responsibility to defend the dignity, rights, and welfare of Kenyans abroad.
“They must bear the shield, carry it with honour, and use it to defend every Kenyan abroad who looks to their country for dignity, justice, and care,” PS Njogu said.
Her message is both timely and critical as Kenya’s diaspora continues to grow in numbers and significance. The diaspora not only contributes to the nation’s economy through remittances but also strengthens Kenya’s global presence. Yet, many Kenyans abroad face legal, social, and employment-related challenges that require direct government support and intervention.
PS Njogu’s call is a reminder that the human face of diplomacy must remain the cornerstone of Kenya’s foreign service. Beyond trade deals and bilateral agreements, the welfare of every Kenyan, regardless of location, must be the government’s top priority.
“Protection is the foundation upon which the Diaspora House stands,” she concluded, challenging Kenya’s foreign missions to live out this core mandate every day.
