Project Management System launches ISO-certified PMI-PMOCP to revolutionize PMO leadership

The Project Management Institute (PMI), the world’s foremost authority on project management, has introduced the PMI® Project Management Office Certified Professional (PMI-PMOCP)™ certification. This latest credential is designed to equip PMO professionals with the expertise necessary to collaborate with executive leadership, drive strategic decisions, and enhance organizational success.

PMOs (Project Management Offices) have evolved from merely overseeing project execution to becoming key enablers of strategic value within organizations. By aligning initiatives with broader business objectives and fostering cross-functional collaboration, PMOs now play a crucial role in ensuring long-term organizational impact.

The PMI-PMOCP™ certification builds upon the legacy of the PMO Certified Practitioner (PMO-CP) certification, which PMI incorporated into its portfolio after acquiring the PMO Global Alliance (PMOGA). The new certification has been carefully reimagined to meet the evolving demands of contemporary organizations and was developed in collaboration with hundreds of experienced PMO leaders and industry experts.

At the heart of the certification is PMI’s latest publication, Project Management Offices: A Practice Guide, which features the PMO Value Ring™ Framework. This innovative approach empowers PMO leaders to transform their offices into customer-centric partners that deliver measurable value to businesses.

Setting a new global standard for excellence, the PMI-PMOCP™ certification is ISO 9001 accredited, ensuring its credibility and impact in the professional landscape. The certification evaluates candidates across six key domains:

PMO Strategic Elements

  • PMO Design and Structuring
  • PMO Operation and Performance
  • PMO Enhancement and Effectiveness
  • People

Professionals who earn this certification demonstrate their ability to design, implement, and lead PMOs that align with corporate goals and drive tangible results.

To qualify for the PMI-PMOCP™ certification, candidates must have at least three years of project management experience or hold a current PMP certification. Additionally, they must complete 10 hours of PMO-specific training. To support applicants, PMI will offer an on-demand exam preparation course that fulfills this training requirement while preparing them for the certification exam.

The exam consists of 120 questions and is administered as a 2-hour, 45-minute proctored assessment. Results are available immediately upon completion, ensuring a seamless experience for test-takers. The exam will be accessible online and at testing centers worldwide, reinforcing PMI’s commitment to making certification flexible and accessible. Initially, resources will be available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, with additional translations planned for later in 2025.

Recognizing the contributions of professionals who already hold the PMO-CP credential, PMI is offering a cost-free transition to the PMI-PMOCP™ certification until February 3, 2026. Existing holders can opt-in without retaking the exam by submitting a brief application confirming their commitment to PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements. These requirements include earning 30 Professional Development Units (PDUs) every three years and paying a renewal fee.

George Asamani, Managing Director of PMI Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized the significance of the new certification: “The PMI-PMOCP™ certification elevates the profession and transforms how organizations achieve project success on a broader scale. It underscores PMI’s commitment to empowering PMO leaders with the tools and knowledge they need to excel in their roles and drive meaningful change in their organizations.”

By establishing a new industry standard, the PMI-PMOCP™ certification empowers professionals to become trusted advisors to executives, navigate complex organizational landscapes with confidence, and drive strategic alignment that results in high
