In a bold move aimed at reinvigorating his administration, President William Ruto announced the immediate dismissal of all Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General, except for the Prime Cabinet Secretary and the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs. This decision, which follows an extensive appraisal of his Cabinet’s performance, was revealed during his State of the Nation address at State House, Nairobi.
Citing the powers vested in him by Article 152(1) and 152(5)(b) of the Constitution and Section 12 of the Office of the Attorney-General Act, President Ruto stated, “Upon reflection, listening keenly to what the people of Kenya have said and after a holistic appraisal of the performance of my Cabinet and its achievements and challenges, I have decided to dismiss with immediate effect all the Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General from the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya.”
The President emphasized his commitment to forming a broad-based government that can effectively address Kenya’s pressing challenges. “I will immediately engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations, with the aim of setting up a broad-based government that will assist me in accelerating and expediting the necessary, urgent and irreversible implementation of radical programmes,” he stated.
The new government will focus on tackling the burden of debt, raising domestic resources, expanding job opportunities, eliminating wastage, and reducing the duplication of government agencies. Additionally, Ruto aims to combat corruption, creating a lean, inexpensive, effective, and efficient administration.
During the transition, government operations will continue uninterrupted under the guidance of Principal Secretaries and other relevant officials. Ruto assured the nation that further measures would be announced in due course to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of government services.
