Old Mutual has partnered with the Kenya Boda Boda Association (KBA), Rescue.Co, Incourage Insurance, and Rafiki Microfinance Bank to launch the Boda Riders Super Cover, a new insurance solution designed to support boda boda operators during hospitalisation and in the unfortunate event of death.
Cash support during hospitalisation
Under the cover, insured riders will receive KES 1,000 per night of hospitalisation starting from the third night, with benefits payable for up to 50 nights within a calendar year.
In case of death, the cover offers a KES 100,000 last expense benefit to the nominated next of kin, ensuring dignified support for affected families.
Addressing riders’ daily realities
Speaking during the launch, Martin Karenju, Managing Director of Old Mutual Life Assurance Kenya, said the product responds to the pressing needs of the fast-growing boda boda sector.
“The number of boda boda operators in Kenya is increasing rapidly, and so are their needs. This cover is built to meet their realities, offering cash support when hospitalisation interrupts earnings and dignified support for families when tragedy strikes,” Karenju said.
High risk of road trauma
The launch comes against a backdrop of alarming road safety statistics.
Over 1,000 people were treated for motorcycle crash injuries in a 1818 period with an average hospital stay of 18 days.
Motorcycle users accounted for roughly 35% of all road deaths in 2023.
In 2024 alone, 4,748 lives were lost on Kenyan roads.
Research shows that road crashes cost Kenya between 3–5% of GDP annually (about KES 310 billion) through productivity losses, medical treatment, and related expenses.
Boda boda sector’s economic importance
The boda boda industry is one of Kenya’s most vital economic pillars, with over 1.6 million active riders and more than two million licensed operators. The sector supports livelihoods, provides affordable transport in both rural and urban areas, and remains a key employer for the youth.
“This partnership blends community networks with institutional strength. It is protection that riders can truly use, but delivered in a way that is simple, fast, and fairly priced,” said Charles Gichira, National Executive Chairman of KBA.
