A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of defiling a 13-year-old girl in Nyando, Kisumu County.
The sentence was handed down by Nyando Magistrate Court after the prosecution, led by Rogers Morara and Repha Mokeira, proved the defilement charge beyond reasonable doubt.
The court heard that the offence occurred on diverse dates between December 2024 and May 3, 2025, at Kochieng in Kadibo Sub-County.
According to the prosecution, the convict, who lived in the neighbourhood of the victim, forcefully took the minor to his house, where he sexually assaulted her.
After committing the offence, he allegedly threatened to kill the girl with a knife if she screamed or revealed the incident to anyone.
The accused denied the charges, prompting the prosecution to call four witnesses to support its case.
In its judgment, Magistrate Joash Kirui Mitei found that the prosecution had established the offence of defilement beyond reasonable doubt.
He consequently convicted the accused under Section 8(1), as read with Section 8(3), of the Sexual Offences Act No. 3 of 2006, and sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment.
The convict has 14 days to appeal against both the conviction and sentence.
