In a critical development, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a public notice following a severe road accident involving a truck carrying toxic chemicals.
The incident occurred on Saturday, 20th July 2024, at the Rironi area along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, in Rironi sub-location, Limuru Division.
The truck was transporting Sodium Cyanide, a highly toxic chemical that poses significant risks to human health and the environment. In the aftermath of the accident, several containers carrying the chemical have gone missing. These containers hold a white, pellet-form substance that is extremely hazardous. Exposure to Sodium Cyanide can lead to severe health complications, including respiratory distress, cardiac arrest, and even death.
The chemical is also detrimental to the environment, potentially contaminating water sources and soil, causing long-term ecological damage.
NEMA has urgently cautioned the public to avoid any contact with these containers or their contents. The authority has stressed that anyone who encounters these containers should not attempt to handle or move them.
Instead, they are advised to report the location of the containers immediately to the nearest police station or Chiefs’ office. Prompt reporting is crucial for enabling authorities to take swift action to secure and safely dispose of the hazardous material, thereby preventing potential harm.
The seriousness of the situation cannot be overstated. NEMA, in collaboration with local law enforcement and emergency response teams, is working tirelessly to locate and neutralize the missing containers. The public’s cooperation is vital in ensuring the containment and mitigation of this dangerous incident.
For further information or in case of an emergency, the public is advised to contact local authorities. NEMA’s advisory emphasizes the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to protect both personal health and the environment from the dangers posed by Sodium Cyanide.
