Ruiru Sports Club is set to host one of the most anticipated fixtures on its calendar as Lady Captain Rodah Mukami marks the end of her two-year term with a week-long Lady Captain’s Prize extravaganza expected to draw more than 300 golfers.
The showcase event, scheduled for February 28 on the club’s 18-hole course, crowns a packed programme blending competition, community engagement and celebration — a reflection of a tenure widely credited with elevating the profile of ladies’ golf at the club.
Festivities tee off on February 23 with a Caddies and Staff Golf Day, recognising the critical role played by support teams in the club’s day-to-day operations. The following day features a Senior Golf Day and Mini Clubnite, offering both competitive and social engagement for members.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Mukami described the event as a celebration of collective achievement.
“This tournament is not just about my exit; it is about the incredible journey we have walked together as a club. Over the past two years, we have seen our ladies grow in confidence and competitiveness, and our juniors step up with remarkable promise. That is the true victory,” she said.
On February 25, attention shifts beyond the fairways with a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative alongside a Greensomes tournament. The Lady Captain’s Prize curtain raiser follows on February 26, before a Koroga-themed Chip and Putt event on February 27, injecting a family-friendly and social element into the build-up.
The main tournament on February 28 is expected to attract a field of 300 players, marking one of the largest turnouts in recent memory. The golfing festival concludes on March 1 with a Juniors Mug Tournament, underscoring the club’s growing investment in youth development.
Mukami exits office having presided over notable milestones. Ruiru Golf Club has recently strengthened its standing in women’s golf, hosting prestigious competitions that have firmly positioned it on the national stage.
Among the highlights was the KLGU Ladies 54-Hole Tournament, alongside the inaugural Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) Golfer of the Year (GOTY) event, both of which elevated the club’s profile in the country’s golfing calendar. In September, the club also hosted the Pendant Tournament for the first time — one of the oldest and most respected medal-style competitions on the KLGU circuit — further underscoring its growing prominence.
Beyond hosting elite tournaments, the club has remained committed to broadening access to the sport for women and youth while raising performance standards. The results are already evident.
Ruiru now boasts two female golfers in its elite team, while a rising crop of young lady golfers continues to sharpen their skills. Many juniors are steadily progressing toward single-handicap status, positioning them as the future ambassadors of the game.
The Lady Captain’s Prize has attracted strong corporate backing, led by Family Bank as the key sponsor. Additional sponsors include Dhahabu Land Ltd, Croton Motors, Aurora Scents, Compnet Advisory Systems, Fantom Estates, Auto Master and Shell — a sign of growing commercial confidence in the club’s flagship event.
As Mukami prepares to hand over the mantle, the week-long festival stands as both a farewell and a statement of intent: that women’s golf at Ruiru is not only thriving but poised for even greater heights.
