Members of the National Assembly Sports Committee have expressed concerns over Kenya’s preparedness to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August, citing delays in stadium renovations and lack of readiness ahead of a crucial inspection by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) next week.
The lawmakers raised the red flag while questioning Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi over the state of key venues earmarked for the continental tournament, including the Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The committee noted that both facilities are yet to be finalized, casting serious doubts on the country’s ability to meet CAF requirements in time.
The CHAN tournament, initially scheduled for February 2025, was postponed to August due to lack of preparedness among the three co-hosting nations. With only a few months remaining, MPs are now questioning whether Kenya will be ready to play its part.
In response, PS Mwangi downplayed the concerns, stating that the current condition of the stadiums could still accommodate the tournament since CHAN standards are less stringent compared to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.
“The level of preparation required for CHAN is not as demanding as that of AFCON. We believe the current facilities can meet the threshold,” Mwangi told the committee.
However, the MPs urged the Ministry of Sports to move with speed and ensure that all infrastructure is completed before the CAF delegation arrives in the country next week. The outcome of the inspection will be key in determining whether Kenya remains a viable co-host for the August tournament.
