Motorcycle Mechanic wins KES 5 Million in Safaricom’s Shine Kenya Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa promotion

Safaricom Plc has announced Kepher Okoth Ooko as the grand prize winner of KES 5 million in its recent “Shine Kenya Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa” promotion. The 24-year-old motorcycle mechanic from Kanga, Migori County, emerged as the top winner after participating in the promotion by purchasing KES 20 data bundles, which earned him an entry into the draw.

The award ceremony, held at Safaricom headquarters in Nairobi, saw Okoth, who was accompanied by his wife Zuhura Akoth, express his amazement and gratitude. Okoth, a father of two, shared that he plans to use his winnings to establish a motorcycle repair garage, purchase land, build a house, and acquire a 14-seater matatu for a transport business. Additionally, he intends to support his wife in starting her own business.

“This is a miracle and a huge blessing for me and my entire family,” Okoth said. “I never imagined that someone like me would ever become a millionaire. To Safaricom, thank you so much for the incredible work you are doing, transforming the lives of many Kenyans.”

In addition to the KES 5 million, Okoth received KES 1 million from the Safaricom Foundation to fund a community project of his choice. He has chosen to renovate and furnish three classrooms and improve water connectivity at Kitere Primary School, his former primary school.

Safaricom’s “Shine Kenya Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa” promotion, which launched in June, aimed to reward and celebrate its customers with daily and weekly cash prizes, including data bundles, while also supporting key community projects selected by winners. Each of the 30 weekly millionaires received an additional KES 250,000 to support community initiatives, ensuring the promotion’s benefits extended beyond individual gains to create a broader social impact.

The community projects are being realized through Safaricom’s Ndoto Zetu Uwezo Wetu program, which focuses on supporting initiatives that have a lasting impact on communities. These projects range from building classrooms to providing clean water and supporting healthcare.

Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom Plc, highlighted the dual focus of the campaign: “Today, we not only celebrate our 31st millionaires but also the 31 community projects that will benefit thousands of Kenyans. When we began this campaign, we had our customers and the community in mind, aiming to celebrate and empower them by transforming their lives across the country. We believe that true success is shared success, and by supporting community initiatives, we can create a ripple effect of positive change.”

This initiative underscores Safaricom’s commitment to social responsibility and community development, demonstrating a holistic approach to corporate promotions that extend their benefits to the wider community.
