M-Pesa Foundation Pumps Kshs 69M into Mumbi Primary in Nyandarua

The M-Pesa Foundation has invested Kshs 69 million in the construction and equipping of modern learning facilities at Mumbi Primary School in Nyandarua County, significantly improving the school’s learning environment.

The upgrade includes 16 new classrooms, an administration block, a fully equipped library and ICT centre, a multipurpose hall, a dining hall and kitchen, and improved sanitation facilities. These comprise 16-door pit latrines each for boys and girls, four-door pit latrines for teachers, and a new school gate.

Part of Citizens of the Future Programme

The project falls under the M-Pesa Foundation’s Citizens of the Future Programme, a five-year initiative launched in October last year aimed at rehabilitating school infrastructure across the country.

Speaking during the launch, Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Peter Ndegwa, said quality infrastructure is key to improving education outcomes.

“Education has the power to transform lives if learners are given an opportunity to access quality facilities. Infrastructure is an enabling factor in improving learning standards,” Ndegwa said, noting that the programme targets more than 500 schools across all 47 counties.

Beyond Infrastructure: ICT and Scholarships

Beyond classroom construction, the Citizens of the Future Programme seeks to enhance ICT skills among teachers in over 600 institutions nationwide. It also aims to award scholarships to more than 10,000 students in senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions over the next five years.

The initiative reflects the Foundation’s broader commitment to strengthening education systems and supporting learners from disadvantaged communities.

Improved Learning Environment Boosts Performance

Mumbi Primary School Headteacher David Gachomba welcomed the upgrade, saying the new facilities have already begun to positively impact learning outcomes.

“We had dilapidated school facilities which affected performance and learner morale. Some structures were condemned, making teaching and learning difficult,” he said.

Gachomba added that since the construction of the new facilities, the school has recorded improved academic performance and expects an increase in learner enrolment this term due to the more conducive learning environment.

KES 132 Million Invested in Nyandarua Education

Since inception, Safaricom, through its Foundation, has invested KES 132 million in education projects across Nyandarua County.

The latest upgrade at Mumbi Primary School marks a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to improve access to quality education in the region.
