Limuru Country Club Unveils Winning Design for New Clubhouse After Devastating Fire

2 Mins read

Limuru Country Club has unveiled the winning architectural design for its new clubhouse, fourteen months after a devastating fire destroyed the historic facility that had long served as the social and administrative hub of the club.

The announcement marks a major milestone in the club’s recovery and signals the beginning of a new chapter for one of Kenya’s oldest private members’ institutions.

Fire That Triggered a New Vision

In January 2025, a fire swept through the clubhouse, destroying the structure that had stood since the post-independence era and served as the heart of the club’s activities for decades.

Rather than reconstruct the same building, the club’s Board of Directors opted for a fresh approach. Through its Development Oversight Committee, the club launched an architectural design competition aimed at creating a modern facility that honours the club’s long-standing heritage while embracing contemporary design and sustainability.

National Architectural Competition

The competition, launched in January 2026, attracted entries from multidisciplinary teams comprising architects, engineers, landscape designers, quantity surveyors, environmental specialists, and green building consultants.

Submissions closed on February 27, with entries unpacked and reviewed at the club on March 3. An independent jury then evaluated the proposals between March 4 and March 6.

The jury was chaired by renowned architect Musau Kimeu, who praised the creativity and ambition demonstrated by Kenya’s architectural community.

“What we saw from Kenya’s architectural community was genuinely impressive. These were not safe designs, but bold responses to a complex brief,” Kimeu said.

“The winning entry stood out because it resolved the tension between heritage and modernity in a way that felt inevitable rather than forced.”

The winning design was officially revealed during a ceremony dubbed “Limuru Rising”, officiated by club chairman Caxton Kinuthia.

The event was attended by members, built environment professionals, and invited guests, including the guest of honour Samuel Kiruthu, a former chairman of the club and longtime resident of the Limuru–Tigoni area.

Kinuthia said the project represents more than rebuilding a structure. “This is not just about a building; it is about what Limuru Country Club stands for in the next century. We challenged Kenya’s best architects to reimagine our home, and what they delivered has exceeded every expectation,” he said.

Next Steps for the New Clubhouse

Following the announcement, the winning design will move into the next phase of development, including detailed design work, regulatory approvals, and procurement processes before construction timelines are finalised.

The new clubhouse is expected to combine modern architectural elements with environmentally sustainable features while preserving the heritage and identity of the club.

Designs Open for Public Viewing

All entries from the competition have been placed on public display at the exhibition area within the club, allowing members and visitors to view the diverse architectural concepts that reimagined the club’s future.

The exhibition runs until March 15, 2026.

Long-Term Vision for the Club

The clubhouse project forms part of a broader transformation plan for the club. Recently, the club issued a request for proposals seeking consultants to develop a Spatial Development Master Plan for 2026–2050.

The 25-year blueprint will guide the future growth of the club’s grounds, covering facility upgrades, operational improvements, and wider estate development.

Together, the new clubhouse and long-term master plan signal a bold new era for Limuru Country Club as it prepares for the next century of its history.
