Head of Public Service Felix Koskei has called on the Public Service Commission (PSC) and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to enhance their partnership and design effective frameworks to boost productivity in the public sector.

Speaking during a joint consultative breakfast meeting with the leadership of both commissions, Koskei emphasized the need for each commission to fully execute its mandate while working collaboratively with sister agencies to improve service delivery.

Koskei highlighted the public sector wage bill as a key concern, noting that while it remains significant, it must be maintained within sustainable levels. He challenged the commissions to explore ways of linking public service pay to productivity, ensuring that those compensated through public funds contribute effectively to national development.

“We must focus on maximizing the productivity of those on the public payroll and harmonizing payments beyond salaries to prevent disparities where officers in similar grades receive widely varying allowances,” Koskei stated.

He further urged PSC and SRC to prioritize staff training, capacity building, and institutionalizing the public service to create a workforce that takes pride in productive work while rejecting corruption and mediocrity.

The meeting followed separate engagements Koskei held with both commissions last week, culminating in this collaborative approach to tackling public sector challenges.

In response, the chairpersons of PSC and SRC pledged to identify key areas for partnership and cooperation to ensure that public funds are utilized prudently. The commissions expressed their commitment to working together to promote efficiency, enhance productivity, and eliminate unnecessary expenditure in government operations.

The collaboration between PSC and SRC is seen as a strategic step towards ensuring prudent use of public resources, improving service delivery, and fostering a culture of accountability in the public sector.
