Konza Technopolis has unveiled an ambitious initiative dubbed Silicon Savannah Woman, aimed at empowering women to innovate, lead, and thrive within Kenya’s rapidly evolving technology landscape. This groundbreaking program seeks to foster inclusivity, ensuring that women have equal opportunities to succeed alongside their male counterparts in the journey toward innovation and sustainable development.
Speaking during the launch, Konza Technopolis CEO John Paul Okwiri emphasized the organization’s commitment to harnessing the full potential of women.
“Silicon Savannah Woman is empowered. We are dedicated to creating opportunities that will enable women to grow, lead, and contribute significantly to the progress of our Smart City,” Okwiri stated.
The initiative is designed to uplift women across diverse sectors, including business, technology, and the creative industry. According to Konza’s Chief Manager of Business Development and Innovation, Joseph Kamanthe, the program aims to extend its influence beyond Kenya’s borders.
“Our goal is to empower women across Africa and eventually host conferences that foster collaboration on a global scale,” Kamanthe noted.
In a parallel development, Konza Technopolis is setting up a KSh 9 billion Centre for Construction Industry Development, which will serve as both a research hub and an incubator for construction start-ups. This strategic move comes in response to a recent audit by the National Construction Authority, revealing that over 700 buildings across Kenya are at high risk of collapse due to poor workmanship and non-compliance with construction standards.
The new centre will focus on upskilling local contractors, equipping them with modern construction techniques, and promoting best practices to enhance safety and quality in the sector. The facility will also support emerging construction start-ups, positioning them to secure larger contracts and drive industry growth.
In a bold move to accelerate development, Konza Technopolis has issued an 18-month ultimatum to investors holding undeveloped land within the Smart City. Investors who fail to develop their parcels risk repossession, with the land set to be reallocated to more active developers.
“We are committed to ensuring that Konza Technopolis thrives as a dynamic and innovative hub. Investors must play their part by developing the land allocated to them,” warned Konza officials.
So far, 147 parcels of land have been allocated to various investors, with the expectation that these developments will catalyze Konza’s transformation into a world-class smart city.
