KNCCI Urges Calm and Dialogue to Safeguard Business Continuity Amid Protests

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) has called for calm and peace following recent protests that have resulted in loss of lives, injuries, and significant disruptions to business operations across the country.
The organization expressed its deepest condolences to the families and friends of those affected by the violence and extended wishes for a swift recovery to the injured.
KNCCI President Dr Erick Rutto emphasized its support for the constitutional right to protest but voiced grave concerns about the instances of violence that have marred these demonstrations. The violence has led to looting, property destruction, and severe disruptions in business activities, causing a ripple effect on the national economy.
“These disruptions have led to significant interruptions in the supply chain, increased operational costs, decreased consumer and investor confidence, and loss of livelihoods, the statement read. The cumulative effect of these issues is a substantial strain on our already fragile economy.” Erick Rutto stated
KNCCI highlighted a worrying 17 percent decline in export activity since the protests began, coupled with a KES 63 billion loss in investor wealth at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) over the past two weeks. These figures underscore the declining investor confidence in Kenya’s economy, exacerbated by the violent elements within the protests.
The Chamber called on the government to uphold its constitutional duty to protect the lives and property of all Kenyans, noting that while peaceful protests are a right, the associated violence and destruction must be promptly addressed to ensure safety and security.
KNCCI urged the government to expedite engagements with protestors to address their concerns and facilitate a return to normalcy. This call comes at a critical time, as the tourism sector, which was the fastest-growing sector in 2023 with a 33.6 percent growth rate, faces potential massive impacts due to the ongoing unrest.
In light of these challenges, we call for calm and encourages open, constructive dialogue and collaboration among all citizens of this great nation. It is imperative that we address the concerns raised and work towards solutions that benefit all Kenyans.” said Rutto
The organization reiterated its commitment to supporting collaborative efforts through an economic recovery strategy and various platforms, including the Youth in Business initiative across its 47 County Chapters. KNCCI expressed its readiness to engage in any actions aimed at resolving the issues arising from the protests swiftly and amicably.
“We believe that through cooperation and mutual understanding, we can foster a peaceful and prosperous environment for all Kenyans,” Dr Rutto added.
As the nation navigates these challenging times, the call for calm, dialogue, and collective action remains crucial in preserving the integrity of the cause and ensuring the well-being of the country’s people and businesses.
