Kenyan Christian University Students Condemn Finance Bill 2024, Call for Government Accountability

1 Mins read

The National Students’ Executive Committee (NASEC), representing Christian Unions in 240 higher education institutions across Kenya, has issued a statement strongly opposing the Finance Bill 2024. The bill proposes a significant tax increase that NASEC warns will exacerbate the economic burdens on students and their families.

NASEC, under the Fellowship of Christian Unions (FOCUS-Kenya), voiced concerns about the proposed 43 percent increase in revenue, amounting to an additional 302 billion Kenya Shillings, from the previous year.

They argue that this hike will lead to tougher economic conditions, particularly for students and young people. The statement emphasizes the need for responsible citizenry and the biblical mandate to address societal issues.

NASEC Chairperson Moses Mumo pointed out the unsustainable costs associated with the new funding model for higher education, which imposes additional financial strain on already struggling parents.

“Many students rely on digital work to fund their education. The proposed increase in digital tax would worsen their financial situation” said Mumo

NASEC Secretary Tabitha Sharon criticized on HELB Funding Delays, which takes long periods for Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funding, which provides insufficient support to students.

“We call on political leaders, particularly members of parliament, to heed the cries of the students. We also urge the Executive branch to address the alarming rates of youth unemployment and pervasive corruption, stressing the need for equal opportunities based on qualifications” said Sharon

The committee commended the engagement of Generation Z in governance but urged them to remain objective and peaceful. They cited 1 Timothy 4:12, encouraging good examples in faith, speech, and conduct.

In a somber note, NASEC extended condolences to the families of Rex Masai and Evans Kiratu, who died advocating for these issues, and called for justice against their killers.

NASEC reaffirmed their commitment to Kenya’s economic prosperity and the active involvement of youth in national affairs, praying for continued peace and prosperity within the country’s borders.
