On October 11, 2024, the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) and the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports convened a high-level breakfast meeting at Villa Rosa Kempinski to mark two significant milestones in the country’s innovation landscape. The meeting celebrated the conclusion of the 2023-2024 Presidential Innovation Award (PIA) Accelerator Program and announced the opening of applications for the 2024-2025 cohort.

Key stakeholders from government, private sector, and international institutions gathered to discuss their roles in fostering innovation in Kenya. This event also served as a networking opportunity to strengthen collaborations aimed at enhancing the national innovation ecosystem.

The meeting featured remarks from Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports. Hon. Murkomen highlighted the critical role of innovation in job creation and wealth generation. He announced plans to expand the PIA program into four distinct categories:

  • Youth Category: Targeting individuals aged 18-35.
  • University Category: For university students with viable research solutions.
  • Mature Start-up Category: For established businesses with at least five years of operation.

Research to Commercialization: Aimed at senior researchers in academic and research institutions.

The Cabinet Secretary emphasized the importance of the upcoming Kenya Innovation Week (KIW) 2024, scheduled for November 25-29, 2024, which will run concurrently with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Youth Symposium. This alignment is expected to provide innovators access to broader markets and free trade opportunities across Africa. He urged stakeholders to explore partnership opportunities that would drive innovation and position Kenya as a global leader in the field.

Hon. Ismail Maalim Madey, Principal Secretary of the Ministry, echoed these sentiments, noting the successes of the previous PIA cohort, which saw significant advancements in job creation and market growth for participating startups. He remarked, “The grants have been instrumental in assisting innovators with research and development, leading to impactful solutions that benefit our communities.”

Dr. Tony Omwansa, CEO of KeNIA, outlined the plans for KIW 2024, themed “Re-imagining Africa’s Future: Kenya’s Innovation Spark.” He articulated the event’s alignment with the African Union’s Agenda 63 and highlighted its goal to showcase Kenya’s vibrant innovation ecosystem. KIW 2024 will also feature initiatives like the Wall of African Textiles Fashion Show and an African Bloggers Panel, promoting youth integration in continental trade.

The CEO committed to creating direct and indirect jobs through PIA initiatives by 2027, utilizing a four-step approach: scouting innovations, recognizing achievements, showcasing solutions, and providing commercialization support through the Presidential Accelerator Programme.

The meeting concluded with the recognition of thirty innovators from the 2023/2024 PIA cohort who successfully completed the program, alongside the official launch of registration for the upcoming 2024/2025 cohort.

This event signifies a robust commitment from Kenya’s leadership to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship, setting the stage for a more prosperous future as the country aims to harness its creative potential on a continental scale.
