Kenya condemns attack on French Embassy in DRC, calls for respect of international law

Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary

In a stern statement, Kenya has expressed grave concern over the violent attacks on its embassy in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), by a riotous mob protesting the ongoing conflict in Eastern DRC. The incident, which also targeted Uganda’s embassy and threatened those of South Africa, the USA, and Belgium, has sparked outrage over violations of international law.

Two Kenyan embassy staff members were forced to flee and seek refuge elsewhere, as DRC security officers reportedly failed to act during the chaos. The attacks saw property looted and destroyed, a clear breach of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which obligates host nations to protect diplomatic missions and personnel.

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Chief Musalia Mudavadi swiftly reached out to DRC’s Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, who confirmed the incident and assured immediate action to restore order. She also committed to compensating Kenya for the damages incurred.

Kenya emphasized its expectation for the safety and dignity of its diplomatic staff, urging the DRC to uphold its international obligations. Despite the alarming events, Kenya reaffirmed its partnership with the DRC and its dedication to pursuing peaceful solutions to the ongoing conflict in the region.

The Kenyan government has called on its citizens in conflict areas to exercise extreme caution, reassuring them of ongoing emergency measures to ensure their safety and welfare.
