Kenyan households and businesses could soon benefit from lower electricity costs following improved hydropower generation by Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), driven by strong water levels across key dams.
Hydropower Output Surpasses Projections
According to KenGen’s April dispatch reports, the company’s main hydro stations produced 11.7 million kilowatt-hours on April 28, surpassing the projected 10.95 million kilowatt-hours.
The Eastern Bloc contributed the largest share, generating about 9.13 million kilowatt-hours against an initial forecast of 8.05 million, signalling robust performance across the hydropower network.
Reservoir Levels Near Optimal Capacity
Water levels across the Seven Forks Dams remained strong, with reservoirs operating thresholds.
KenGen noted that reservoir levels are averaging about 99 per cent of operating capacity, enabling the company to maximise hydropower generation, one of the cheapest energy sources on Kenya’s grid.
Lower Costs and Reduced Reliance on Thermal Power
Acting Managing Director and CEO Ahmed Issack said the strong hydro performance provides greater flexibility to expand renewable energy supply while reducing dependence on costly thermal generation.
The company emphasised that sustained hydropower output helps moderate electricity costs, shields consumers and industries from price shocks, and enhances overall grid stability.
Assurance to Downstream Communities
KenGen also sought to address concerns among communities living downstream of the Seven Forks Dams, clarifying that high water levels do not signal an immediate flooding risk.
The company stated that its engineers are implementing a robust water management programme to maintain reservoirs within safe operating ranges. Even as Masinga Dam approaches maximum levels, uncontrolled spilling is not expected as long as inflows remain manageable.
Stable Operations Support Energy Security
April dispatch data indicate consistent and stable operations across the hydro cascade, with no signs of emergency generation requirements. April 28 marked one of the strongest hydropower output days of the month.
KenGen reaffirmed that a combination of strong reservoir levels, prudent water management, and reliable hydropower generation will continue to support affordable, clean energy for households and businesses while safeguarding downstream communities.
