Kagio Market traders applaud expansion project as modern facility rises

1 Mins read

Traders and residents in Kagio, Ndia Constituency, have welcomed the ongoing expansion and modernization of Kagio Market, hailing it as a transformative development poised to ease congestion and boost business in the region.

The ambitious project, currently under construction, is a joint initiative between the County Government of Kirinyaga and the National Government through the Economic Stimulus Programme. It was launched by President Dr. William Ruto during his recent development tour of the Mt. Kenya region as part of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

The two-storey market, set to be one of the largest fresh produce trading hubs in the region, will accommodate up to 3,000 traders—double its previous capacity. With a budget of KSh 357 million, the facility will feature modern amenities including internet connectivity, a reliable water supply, electricity, toilets, and a perimeter wall for enhanced security.

Traders have expressed optimism that the upgraded infrastructure will significantly improve their operations and attract more customers. “The congestion we used to face made it difficult to operate. With this upgrade, we are confident it will improve the working environment and attract more customers,” one trader told local media.

Kirinyaga County officials praised the national government’s support, emphasizing that the project will not only support local traders but also create job opportunities and elevate the region’s economic standing.

Construction is progressing at a steady pace, with completion expected by May next year. The modern market is seen as a key driver in revitalizing grassroots trade and unlocking economic opportunities for small-scale entrepreneurs in the area.
