Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho has established a high-level technical committee to address outstanding compliance issues surrounding Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited following the suspension of the company’s operations.
Joho said the decision was reached after a meeting with executives of Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, where the Ministry and the company discussed concerns that had led to the suspension of operations.
The committee will be jointly led by the Principal Secretary for Mining, representing the Ministry, and the Chief Executive Officer of Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited.
According to Joho, the committee will conduct a detailed technical review of the outstanding compliance matters and prepare a report for submission to his office for consideration and further direction.
The key issues to be addressed include mineral beneficiation and in-country value addition, outstanding community benefits and royalty obligations, unresolved land matters, opening up the area for multiple mineral extraction and outstanding matters involving the Kajiado County Government.
The Cabinet Secretary said the Government remains committed to engaging investors constructively while ensuring that mining companies comply with Kenya’s laws and regulations.
“The objective is not only to resolve the outstanding compliance matters but also to establish a sustainable framework that promotes responsible mining, value addition, community development and mutually beneficial partnerships,” Joho said.
The development comes as the Government seeks to strengthen oversight of the mining sector and ensure that local communities derive greater benefits from mineral resources extracted in their areas.
Joho maintained that resolving the issues affecting Tata Chemicals Magadi would require collaboration between the Government, the company, the county administration and affected communities.
The committee is expected to provide a technical assessment that will guide the Ministry on the way forward regarding the company’s operations and the outstanding compliance concerns.
