Java House has achieved a monumental environmental milestone by cutting 148 tonnes of carbon emissions this year. This achievement comes courtesy of an innovative used cooking oil recycling project in partnership with Muenzer Kenya, a renewable energy company.
The initiative transforms Java House’s used cooking oil—once considered kitchen waste—into biodiesel, a cleaner, greener alternative to fossil fuels. The biodiesel produced not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also champions the circular economy, proving that sustainability and business success can go hand in hand.
At a recognition ceremony honoring Java House’s impactful contributions, Maureen Mithamo, Head of Corporate Affairs at Java House, expressed pride in the company’s environmental efforts.“Eliminating 148 tonnes of CO₂ in a single year is testament to the power of collaboration. By transforming waste into a resource that combats climate change, we hope to inspire others in the hospitality industry to follow suit.”
Her sentiments were echoed by Purity Simiyu, Commercial and Country Manager at Muenzer Kenya. “Java House sets a benchmark for sustainability in business. Used cooking oil is a vital feedstock for biodiesel, and partnerships like this are key to building a greener future. We look forward to amplifying our impact together.”
This forward-thinking initiative aligns perfectly with Kenya’s clean energy goals, as the country accelerates its push for 81 percent renewable energy in electricity generation. It also highlights the vital role businesses can play in advancing climate-smart solutions.
Beyond environmental impact, Java House’s commitment to sustainability reaches far into local communities. From supporting local farmers and nurturing artistic talent to providing school lunches for 2,500 students in underserved areas, the company continues to champion initiatives that uplift lives while protecting the planet.
As the hospitality giant carves a new path for sustainability, Java House proves that small changes—like recycling cooking oil—can generate massive environmental benefits. Their success sets the stage for other businesses to innovate, collaborate, and join the movement toward a greener tomorrow.
