IYF free weekend Academy season 7 graduates, empowering youth for tomorrow’s job market

Empowering Youth Talent for Tomorrow’s Job Market: IYF Free Weekend Academy Season 7 Graduation

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to youth development by supporting initiatives that equip young people with practical skills for the evolving job market. This was highlighted during the 7th graduation ceremony of the International Youth Fellowship (IYF) Free Weekend Academy, held at its headquarters along Thika Road.

Speaking at the event, the Director of Youth Social Development at the State Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ms. Emily Maina, emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach in addressing youth development challenges. She reiterated that the government’s “whole-of-society” strategy, which involves partnerships with NGOs, academia, and private sector stakeholders, is key to unlocking the potential of Kenya’s youth.

“We know that Kenya is a youthful nation, with 75 percent of the population being under 35 years old. This segment has the power to transform the country, which is why we prioritize fostering positive mindsets. It is gratifying to see stakeholders like IYF playing a pivotal role in empowering young people, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills to harness Kenya’s demographic dividend,” said Ms. Maina.

Accompanying her was Kiambu Deputy Governor, Ms. Rosemary Kirika, who congratulated the 5,000 graduates and encouraged them to remain focused on their aspirations.

The IYF Free Weekend Academy has been instrumental in bridging the skills gap, particularly for disadvantaged youth who may not have the financial means to pursue higher education. Offering 29 different courses including Plumbing, Beauty and Hairdressing, Catering, Camera Operations, Computer Packages, and Fashion and Design the academy provides young people with valuable skills that enhance their employability and entrepreneurial potential.

Rev. Yohan Kim, the IYF Chairman, urged the graduates to cultivate the right mindset rather than focus solely on material wealth.

“Many people think having a lot of money, intelligence, or a good education is what brings happiness. But the key to a fulfilling life is a positive mindset,” he told the graduates.

Since its inception in 2007, the IYF Free Weekend Academy has trained over 60,000 youth, many of whom have gone on to become significant contributors to society. The academy operates on a three-month cohort model, allowing students to specialize in one course at a time. Upon graduation, the top-performing students receive scholarships to further their education at Mahanaim College, a key partner in the initiative.

The next cohort of the IYF Free Weekend Academy is set to begin on February 22, 2025, at the IYF headquarters along Thika Road. As the program continues to grow, it remains a beacon of hope for thousands of young Kenyans, equipping them with skills and confidence to navigate the job market successfully.

For aspiring students seeking to transform their future, this initiative presents an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience, network with industry professionals, and take a step closer to achieving their dreams.
