I&M Bank Kenya has appointed Abdi Mohamed as its new Chief Executive Officer, taking over the leadership of the bank after receiving regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Kenya.
Mohamed officially assumed the position on Monday, October 5, 2026, as I&M Bank moves into another phase of growth and transformation in Kenya’s competitive banking sector. The new CEO brings more than 30 years of experience in banking, financial services and corporate leadership. He will lead I&M Bank Kenya’s business, focusing on strengthening customer relationships, driving sustainable growth and supporting the bank’s ongoing transformation.
Sarit Raja Shah, Group Executive Director at I&M Group, welcomed Mohamed to the organisation and said his experience would be important as the bank pursues its next stage of growth.
“The Board is pleased to welcome Abdi to I&M Group. His extensive banking experience, strong leadership credentials and deep understanding of the Kenyan and regional financial services landscape will be instrumental in leading the Bank through its next phase of growth,” Shah said.
Mohamed joins I&M Bank from Absa Bank Kenya, where he served as Country CEO and Managing Director. During his time at Absa, he led the organization’s growth and transformation. He said he was looking forward to working with I&M Bank’s employees, customers and partners to build on the institution’s achievements.
“I am deeply honoured to join I&M Bank Kenya and to be part of an institution with such a strong heritage, talented people and deep customer relationships. I look forward to working closely with the team, our customers and our partners as we build on the Bank’s achievements and pursue the opportunities ahead,” Mohamed said.
“This is a journey we will undertake together, with a continued focus on creating meaningful value for our customers, colleagues and stakeholders,” he added.
Beyond his executive career, Mohamed holds several industry and board positions. He is the Chairperson of the UN Global Compact Network Kenya and a member of the Kenya Bankers Association Governing Council. He also serves on the boards of Integrated Payment Services Limited (IPSL) and Touch Health.
Following Mohamed’s arrival, Kihara Maina, who had been serving as interim CEO, will resume his role as Regional CEO of I&M Group.
The leadership change gives I&M Bank a new executive at a time when the institution is seeking to deepen customer relationships, expand its business and continue its transformation in the Kenyan financial services market
