The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is set to convene the 43rd Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, to address the worsening crisis in South Sudan.
The virtual summit comes at a critical time as renewed tensions threaten to unravel the fragile peace agreement between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar. IGAD, the regional bloc mediating South Sudan’s peace process, has reiterated its commitment to fostering dialogue, easing tensions, and securing long-term stability in the country.
“IGAD, as the guarantor of the Revitalized Agreement (R-ARCSS), remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting dialogue, de-escalating tensions, and securing a peaceful future for the people of South Sudan,” the organization stated.
In recent days, clashes between rival factions have raised fears of a return to full-scale conflict. Despite assurances from President Kiir that South Sudan will not descend into war, the situation remains volatile.
A significant escalation occurred on Friday when a United Nations helicopter evacuating members of the national army came under attack. The incident resulted in several casualties, including the death of a crew member. The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from the international community, with calls for urgent intervention to prevent further violence.
The upcoming IGAD summit is expected to bring together regional heads of state to assess the situation and explore solutions to reinforce the peace process. The outcome of the meeting will be crucial in determining the next steps toward sustainable peace in South Sudan.
