IG Douglas Kanja leads AFRIPOL meeting in Algeria on Wednesday 30 2024
Algeria – Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS) and President of the AU Mechanism for Police Cooperation (AFRIPOL), IG Douglas Kanja, has assumed leadership at the 12th AFRIPOL Steering Committee meeting held in Algiers on October 29-30, 2024.
The meeting aims to address key issues surrounding AFRIPOL’s statutes, organizational structure, and budget, laying the groundwork for the upcoming General Assembly.
In his capacity as AFRIPOL President, IG Kanja is overseeing deliberations as the head of AFRIPOL’s General Assembly, the organization’s supreme decision-making body, tasked with setting the strategic direction for police cooperation across Africa. The assembly’s focus includes enhancing collaborative efforts to combat transnational organized crime, terrorism, and cybercrime throughout the continent.
AFRIPOL, which maintains strategic alliances with law enforcement bodies like INTERPOL and other international partners, seeks to strengthen cross-border security cooperation in Africa. This collaboration aims to create a united front against growing security challenges, promoting peace and stability on the continent.
In attendance at the opening ceremony were several key figures, including Mr. Ali Badaoui, Director General of Algerian National Police; Amb. Jalel Chelba, Acting Executive Director of AFRIPOL; Amb. Salem Mohamed, AU Legal Advisor; African Chiefs of Police; representatives of AU Policy and Advocacy Programs (PAPs); representatives of Human Rights (HR); and Regional Chiefs of Police Cooperation.

IG Kanja, who arrived in Algiers yesterday with NPS Spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango, is expected to guide discussions over the two-day meeting as AFRIPOL seeks to address operational needs and enhance the organization’s effectiveness. His leadership reflects AFRIPOL’s commitment to tackling security threats on an international scale through increased collaboration and resource optimization.
The AFRIPOL Steering Committee meeting marks an essential step toward reinforcing Africa’s capacity to respond to pressing security issues and underscores the organization’s role in aligning efforts to protect citizens, support regional stability, and foster a secure environment for economic and social development.
