The Ministry of Health has confirmed 153 cases of cholera across Migori, Kisumu, and Nairobi counties, as concerns rise over the spread of the disease amid the ongoing heavy rains.
Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni revealed that 53 cases have been recorded in Migori County, 56 in Kisumu, and 44 in Nairobi. The PS called for urgent public health interventions to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread to neighboring counties.
Speaking in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County after attending a church service, Muthoni stressed the importance of personal hygiene in curbing the cholera outbreak. She urged the public to adopt practices such as frequent hand washing, boiling drinking water, clearing bushes, and the proper use of pit latrines.
“Open defecation must be avoided at all costs, especially now that we are experiencing widespread flooding due to the ongoing rains,” Muthoni emphasized.
In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health has intensified efforts to contain the disease, with public health teams deployed to the affected counties to raise awareness and implement response measures.
The Ministry continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with health officials to curb the spread of cholera.
