The Kenyan government is set to enhance the capabilities of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) within the construction industry as part of its strategic push to integrate these businesses into the country’s expanding construction sector.
Arch. Oliver Okello, Director at the State Department for Public Works, announced that significant progress has been made in the development of a Centre of Excellence at Konza Technopolis. This initiative aims to elevate the technical skills and industry knowledge of MSMEs, enabling them to better compete for commercial opportunities in Kenya’s construction space.
The Centre of Excellence will serve as a pivotal hub for training and innovation, providing MSMEs with cutting-edge construction techniques and knowledge. This move aligns with the government’s ongoing focus on integrating smaller businesses into its Affordable Housing projects.
Currently, MSMEs are primarily involved in supplying construction inputs such as steel doors, windows, wooden frames, and flush doors. By advancing their technical capabilities, the government hopes to broaden their participation in more complex aspects of the construction industry.
This initiative was highlighted during the launch of the 5th International Construction Research Conference and Exhibition (ICoRCE) 2024, which is scheduled to take place in Mombasa County in September 2024. The conference is dedicated to supporting the growth of MSMEs in the construction sector through the introduction of modern technology and innovative practices. It aims to address several critical issues impacting the industry, including poor payment practices and ineffective contract management.
One of the key focuses of the conference will be to tackle the persistent problems associated with poor contract management and late payments, which have undermined the sector’s progress. The event will advocate for better awareness and adoption of smart contracting practices and the newly launched Building Code 2024, which is designed to improve regulatory standards and enhance project management efficiency.
