During a press briefing at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), the Government Spokesperson Hon. Isaac Mwaura, clarified key issues concerning recent Generation Z protests and the government’s response.

Highlighting the economic impact, Mwaura stated that the country has incurred a significant loss of Ksh. 6 billion due to the protests, raising concerns about potential economic downturns if the unrest continues. He urged Generation Z youth to reconsider their plans for further protests to avoid chaos and maintain national peace.

“The enormous loss was a a result of damage to crucial infrastructure, looting in social places including supermarkets as well as lost revenue due to closure of Businesses,” he said

On the same vein Mwaura addressed the abduction of journalist Macharia Gaitho, explaining that it was a case of mistaken identity. He assured that the government is prepared for dialogue with journalists and that investigations are ongoing regarding the police shooting of Kameme TV reporter.

The government spokesperson expressed solidarity with the families of those who lost their lives and were injured during the protests, affirming support for all affected and those in recovery.

In response to the youth’s demands, President William Ruto has taken several measures, including rejecting the Finance Bill and making significant changes within the government. Actions such as abolishing the Office of the First Lady, engaging in direct dialogues with the youth, and initiating reforms to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) aim to enhance governance and accountability.

The dismissal of the Inspector General of Police is one of the notable steps showcasing efforts to reform law enforcement agencies.

Mwaura emphasized that these government actions indicate substantial policy changes, underscoring the power of the youth’s voices. He reiterated that President Ruto bears the responsibility to shield the country from turmoil, calling on every Kenyan to contribute towards building a peaceful and progressive nation.

Mwaura stressed the importance of preventing individuals with selfish motives from exploiting the protests and urged citizens to return to normal life for the country’s development.
