Eastern Produce Kenya Launches Integrated GBV and Mental Health Clinic in Nandi Hills

Eastern Produce Kenya (EPK), in partnership with Taylors of Harrogate, Infre South Africa, and the County Government of Nandi, has officially launched a Gender-Based Violence and Mental Health (GBVMH) Clinic at the Nandi Hills County Hospital.

The facility is the first integrated centre of its kind in the region, designed to provide survivors of gender-based violence with coordinated, dignified, and comprehensive care within a single safe environment.

Strengthening Survivor Support Systems

The new clinic is intended to improve access to essential services by bringing together medical care, counselling, legal coordination, and psychosocial support under one roof.

It also complements the existing GBV Gender Desk established by EPK at the Nandi Hills Police Station, strengthening reporting and referral pathways for survivors while improving coordination between healthcare providers, law enforcement officers, counsellors, and social workers.

Integrated Care for GBV and Mental Health

The facility includes consultation rooms, counselling and therapy spaces, male and female observation rooms, child-friendly support areas, a reception unit, and a referral coordination centre.

Mental health services have been fully integrated into the model of care, recognising the significant emotional and psychological impact often associated with gender-based violence.

Survivors are encouraged to seek help through the GBV helpline 1195, where a County Gender-Based Violence Coordinator will support reporting, referrals, and case management to ensure timely and continuous care.

Commitment to Dignity and Community Healing

Speaking during the launch, EPK Operations Director Noel Lindsay-Smith said the clinic reflects a broader commitment to dignity, protection, and recovery for survivors.

“Gender-based violence is not only a health issue; it is a human right and community issue. Survivors deserve spaces that protect their dignity, safeguard their privacy, and support their healing journey in a holistic way,” said Lindsay-Smith.

He added that the integrated approach is intended to reduce stigma and ensure survivors feel supported throughout their recovery process.

Strengthening Public–Private Partnerships

The County Government of Nandi welcomed the initiative, noting that collaborative efforts between public institutions and private sector partners are essential in addressing gender-based violence and mental health challenges.

County Secretary Dr. Francis Sang said the facility demonstrates the value of coordinated action in strengthening health and social support systems.

“This facility demonstrates the power of partnership between government, private sector and community stakeholders in strengthening our health and social support systems,” said Dr. Sang.

Addressing Rising GBV and Mental Health Concerns

The launch comes amid growing national concern over gender-based violence and mental health challenges in Kenya, with increasing calls for stronger prevention strategies and survivor protection mechanisms.

The new clinic is expected to enhance access to timely care while reinforcing multi-sectoral collaboration in addressing GBV cases.

EPK reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote safer, healthier, and more resilient communities, particularly for women, children, and families in tea-growing regions and beyond.
