Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) has marked a significant sustainability milestone after planting its one millionth tree under its flagship environmental programme, Much More Than Trees.
The achievement was celebrated at the AMREF International University campus in Northlands, Ruiru, during an event officiated by Dr. Clement Ng’oriareng, Principal Senior Deputy Director for Forest Conservation and Management at the Kenya Forest Service.
Launched in 2023, the Much More Than Trees initiative is central to DTB’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its ambition to achieve net-zero operations by 2030.
The programme goes beyond tree planting to prioritise monitoring, nurturing, and ensuring long-term growth of the trees, while supporting community livelihoods and building environmental resilience.
DTB Group Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Nasim Devji, reaffirmed the bank’s dedication to sustainable development, noting that the institution will scale up its efforts by partnering with more organisations to expand the country’s forest cover.
“At DTB, Sustainability Excellence is one of the key pillars of our business growth strategy and is entrenched in how we do business and get involved in efforts to grow the economy. Tree-growing is key to sustainability, and we are keen on growing rather than just planting trees because the work does not stop when we put seedlings in the ground,” said Ms Devji.
She emphasized that the one million trees planted since 2023 are under continuous monitoring to ensure they are thriving and capable of growing independently.
“These one million trees represent carbon reduction, community empowerment, biodiversity restoration, and hope. And we are only getting started,” Devji added.
DTB has implemented its tree-growing efforts across schools, tertiary institutions, and farming communities. In schools, the bank has supported the creation of micro forests composed of fruit trees to enhance access to fresh produce and enrich students’ learning.
Through a partnership with KTDA farmers, DTB has helped introduce avocado trees, offering farmers a new income stream.
With a target of planting and growing 10 million trees by 2030, DTB aims to make a substantial contribution to Kenya’s National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign, supporting national efforts to combat climate change, promote biodiversity, and strengthen community resilience.
