David Kiptum, Deaflympics silver medal winner
Kenya’s famous deaf athlete David Kiptum Kipkogei grabbed the silver medal in the men’s marathon at the Tokyo 2025 Summer Deaflympics, a feat which he has been able to do consistently in the global competitions.
On the Tokyo Expressway, Kipkogei was very fast to finish in 2 hours 17 minutes and 30 seconds, and he was only 1 minute and 20 seconds behind Sweden’s Otto Kingstedt who made a new record to 2:16:10. Colombia’s Jose Libardo was also present on the podium in 2:23:50.
In the ladies’ marathon, Kenya, however, did not manage to get the medal after Serah Kimani and Grancy Kandagor had to abandon the race.
The marathon was the final event of Kenya’s team at the Games, and the country had an excellent overall showing with a total of 15 medals—five gold, six silver, and four bronze.
Kenya’s Director of Sports, Jaxon Indakwa, was full of praise for Team Kenya and their great results and he also reiterated the government’s promise to continue supporting deaf athletes in future international competitions.
