CS Rebecca Miano mourns death of PCEA moderator’s spouse

Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Rebecca Miano has led a host of government and religious leaders in mourning the death of Winnie Wanjiru Thegu, the spouse of the Moderator of the 24th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA).

Wanjiru passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Kenyatta Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital. Her death has left a deep void not only within her family but also in the wider PCEA community and faith circles across the country.

In a moving tribute shared on social media, CS Miano praised Wanjiru’s life of faithful service and her enduring impact on the church, particularly in championing women-led projects.

“Wanjiru, you served. We are comforted that God has called you home,” said Miano. “To our 24th GA Moderator, in this time of sorrow, remember that God promises eternal life and peace. Rest well.”

Wanjiru was widely recognized for her leadership and active role in advancing women’s initiatives within the church. According to CS Miano, her efforts left a lasting legacy that touched many lives.

The PCEA General Assembly has announced a series of services to commemorate Wanjiru’s life. Consolation services will be held from Sunday, May 4, to Tuesday, May 6, at PCEA St. Andrews Church in Nairobi, beginning at 4:00 PM each day. A memorial service is scheduled at the same venue on Wednesday, May 7, at 2:00 PM, followed by the final burial at PCEA Kiamabara Church, Mathaithi Parish in Tumutumu Presbytery on Thursday, May 8, starting at 10:00 AM.

As condolences continue to pour in, national and church leaders have commended Wanjiru’s humility, strength, and unwavering dedication to ministry. Many have drawn inspiration from her faith-driven life and service to others.

Quoting the Book of Job 1:21, mourners reflected on her legacy: “The Lord gave and He has taken away; may His name be praised.”

Wanjiru Thegu’s memory, grounded in faith and compassion, will remain cherished in the hearts of many.
