Carrefour hands over KES 6.9 M sanitation facility to Mutuini Primary School

Carrefour, operated in Kenya by Majid Al Futtaim, has officially handed over a KES 6.9 million modern sanitation facility to Mutuini Primary School in Dagoretti, Nairobi.

The facility, fully funded through Carrefour’s Round Up Your Bill initiative. Is therefore, aimed to improve hygiene standards and boost learning conditions for more than 860 students and teachers.

Transforming sanitation at school level

The new ablution block comprises 30 sanitary units, complete with hand washing sinks, offering clean and modern hygiene services. By addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges, the project is expected to support improved attendance Also to improve better hygiene practices, and enhanced academic performance for learners at the school.

Private sector backing for public education

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Christophe Orcet, Regional Director – East Africa, Majid Al Futtaim Retail, highlighted the critical role the private sector can play in supporting public welfare initiatives.

“According to UNICEF, one in three schools in Kenya face sanitation challenges that contribute to preventable illnesses and reduced learning outcomes. At Majid Al Futtaim, we are committed to supporting sustainable development and initiatives that positively impact communities,” said Orcet.

He added that the success of the sanitation project underscores the power of collective action: “The Round Up Your Bill initiative is a great example of what is possible when we partner with customers and communities to create meaningful change. This facility will directly improve the health and education outcomes of children who deserve the best chance at success.”

Local impact and gratitude

However, the facility was welcomed by school leadership as a timely and transformative intervention. George Njenga, Head Teacher at Mutuini Primary School, praised the initiative:

“This facility will have a lasting impact on our pupils and staff. It provides clean, safe toilets and proper handwashing stations, which are essential for their health and well-being. We are deeply grateful to Carrefour and every customer who contributed to this cause.”

Empowering communities through customer-led giving

Additionally, Carrefour’s Round Up Your Bill programme invites shoppers to voluntarily round up their purchase amounts at checkout. The accumulated funds are then invested in community development projects, such as this school sanitation upgrade.
