Britam Connect Launches Heshima Farewell Plan to Ease Funeral Burden

2 Mins read

Britam Connect has partnered with Montezuma Funeral Home to introduce the Heshima Farewell Plan, a last-expense policy designed to cushion Kenyan families against the rising cost of funerals.

Rising Funeral Costs Drive Demand for Insurance Solutions

The launch comes amid steadily increasing funeral expenses across Kenya, with costs in major cities such as Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu surpassing KSh 300,000.

Even in rural areas, families are facing mounting costs linked to transportation, mortuary services, coffins, and catering.

According to the Association of Kenya Insurers, middle-class households typically spend between KSh 50,000 and KSh 300,000 on funerals, highlighting the urgent need for affordable financial protection.

From Cash Payouts to Full-Service Funeral Support

Unlike traditional funeral insurance products, the Heshima Farewell Plan offers a fully managed service model. Through the partnership with Montezuma Funeral Home, families receive comprehensive support that includes mortuary fees, transport arrangements, a hearse, casket, flowers, obituary assistance, funeral programs, and chapel services.

The plan aims to reduce the logistical and emotional burden on grieving families by handling end-to-end funeral arrangements.

Flexible and Affordable Coverage Options

Approved by the Insurance Regulatory Authority, the policy provides coverage for both natural and accidental death. It features tiered packages to cater to different income levels:

Basic Cover: KSh 100,000 for an annual premium of KSh 1,000

Standard Cover: KSh 150,000 for KSh 1,400 per year

Executive Cover: KSh 300,000 for KSh 1,700 annually

Premium Cover: KSh 500,000 for KSh 1,850 annually

Eligibility extends to applicants aged 18–70, with renewable coverage up to age 80. Children, students, parents, and parents-in-law can also be included under specified terms, with waiting periods ranging from one to six months.

Industry Leaders Highlight Need for Preparedness

Speaking at the launch, Evah Kimani emphasized the importance of planning ahead:

“The burden of funeral expenses continues to challenge many families in Kenya. With the Heshima Farewell Plan, we aim to ease this burden and encourage people to plan for the unexpected.”

Josh Karuga added that the partnership enables more holistic support for bereaved families, ensuring dignified send-offs without financial strain.

Low Insurance Uptake Remains a Challenge

Despite rising costs, funeral insurance penetration in Kenya remains low, with many families relying on informal welfare groups, community fundraising, or loans to cover burial expenses.

Britam Connect hopes the Heshima Farewell Plan will not only provide immediate relief but also drive awareness and adoption of funeral insurance products nationwide.

Expanding Footprint in Funeral Insurance

The launch builds on Britam Connect’s growing presence in the sector, following a previous partnership with Francis Funeral Home targeting communities in Western Kenya.

With this new offering, Britam Connect is positioning itself at the forefront of inclusive insurance, providing Kenyan families with both financial security and peace of mind during life’s most difficult moments.
