Bodaboda Saccos back Sakaja, reject Sonko endorsement

The leadership of various bodaboda saccos and associations in Nairobi has come out strongly to denounce an alleged endorsement of former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko as the patron of the bodaboda fraternity.

Speaking at a press conference, Chairman Denis Achieng, representing both sacco councils and national bodaboda associations, dismissed the claims made on March 16, 2025, by a group seen on social media purporting to speak on behalf of the sector. He termed the endorsement as a “mockery” to the industry, stating that the individuals involved do not represent the interests of bodaboda operators.

“We are here today to categorically state that we are not part of the imposters seen on social media alleging that they have endorsed former Nairobi Governor His Excellency Mike Mbuvi Sonko as the bodaboda patron. This is a mere mockery of the bodaboda industry as they do not and are not representing our interests,” Achieng asserted.

Instead, the bodaboda leadership reaffirmed their support for Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, whom they recognize as their legitimate patron. According to Achieng, Governor Sakaja has consistently advocated for the welfare of bodaboda operators, including providing a conducive working environment and appointing their representatives to key county transport committees.

“The governor has, in the history of our country, carried the bodaboda fraternity at heart. He has allocated us a conducive working environment and given us an opportunity to sit in the transport community at the county under one Mr. Ken Onyango, which we are enjoying to date despite the setbacks,” Achieng added.

The statement further dismissed any moves to shift allegiance to Sonko, making it clear that bodaboda operators will continue to support Sakaja until 2032. The leadership also condemned what they described as a scheme by “a few individuals who, without shame, are biting the hand that feeds them.”

With this strong declaration, the bodaboda sector in Nairobi has drawn a firm line, distancing itself from political maneuvers while emphasizing its continued support for Governor Sakaja’s administration.
