Absa Bank Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to the affluent segment with a revamped and expanded suite of banking services, aimed at meeting the evolving needs of modern consumers. This initiative is part of the bank’s broader strategy to transition from a product-driven approach to a customer segments-led model, driven by deep consumer insights.
The bank’s consumer banking division has now been categorized into three distinct segments: NextGen consumers, Mass & Middle market consumers, and Affluent Consumers. This reorganization is designed to ensure that all customers, regardless of financial status, find tailored value in Absa’s offerings.
Moses Muthui, Absa Consumer Banking Director, highlighted the importance of adapting to the changing landscape of banking, stating, “As the wealthy look for better returns, we are seeing new opportunities across markets. There has been a noticeable gap in how entry and mid-affluent consumers are served. Our goal is to build stronger relationships through personalized service and leadership in this space.”
Absa’s affluent banking is structured into three tiers: Prestige, Premier, and Premier Wealth, targeting a broad spectrum of clients. The bank has appointed a dedicated Director of Affluent Banking to enhance service delivery across these segments. Under this new framework, Prestige clients will receive tailored financial guidance to help them progress to the Premier segment. In turn, Premier clients will be supported in their advancement to the Premier Wealth tier.
Seema Desouza, the newly appointed Director of Affluent Banking at Absa Bank Kenya, remarked, “Our affluent banking caters to a diverse clientele, driven by unique insights to meet distinct financial goals. This focus reinforces our commitment to addressing the varied needs of each segment.”
The upgraded offerings include new benefits for Prestige customers, such as a retrenchment cover and a Platinum Card that offers perks like paid lounge access, an interest-free period of up to 50 days, buy-now-pay-later options, extended warranty, and purchase protection. Premier customers will enjoy a Signature Card that includes lifestyle benefits, access to meeting rooms at Premier Centres, and exclusive events for networking and thought leadership.
Additionally, Premier Wealth customers will benefit from wealth management solutions, including structured notes and estate planning services aimed at generational wealth transfer.
The changes come in response to insights from the 2024 Africa Wealth Report, which indicates a rapid expansion of Africa’s affluent market, with Kenya recognized as the fourth wealthiest country on the continent.
Absa Bank’s renewed focus on the affluent segment underscores its commitment to providing enhanced, personalized services that adapt to the unique financial journeys of its diverse clientele.
